Amy McGrath Attempts to Reverse Support for Single-Payer Health Care in Latest Ad

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky – McConnell Senate Committee campaign manager Kevin Golden released the following statement on Amy McGrath’s attempt to walk back her support for radical left-wing health care policies:

“A week after announcing support for President Trump’s impeachment and removal from office, Amy McGrath is desperately trying to reframe her support for radical left-wing policies. As with nearly everything she’s discussed since entering the race, there is a wealth of video where she contradicts her newfound views of health care and beyond that will continue to haunt her intent to deceive voters at every turn.”

As the Louisville Courier Journal reported today:

“When McGrath ran for Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District seat two years ago, she repeatedly said how she favored a single-payer plan, but she didn’t believe it could pass. ‘If we were to start over and have to start over from scratch, say this was 10 years ago — I think we now know that single-payer would be the way to go,’ McGrath told NPR in an August 2018 interview.”

Despite McGrath’s new ad claiming she does not support Medicare for All, her own words say otherwise. Throughout her failed run for Congress in 2018, McGrath made clear that, if elected, she will work to move American health care to a single-payer system:

• During an August 2017 interview, McGrath stated, “[M]y opinion is that single-payer is the way to go. But that’s not the world we live in. … I think we should work on fixing the health care system that we have right now. If that doesn’t work long-term, I think single-payer is definitely the way we need to move.” [Kentucky Newsmakers With Bill Bryant, WKYT, 8/14/17]
• On “Hey Kentucky” in September 2017, McGrath made clear that her goal is to completely overhaul American health care and establish a single-payer system, “You know, for single payer, I believe if we were to start a health care system from scratch, that would be the way to go. But that’s not the world we live in. It’s just not realistic right now. And so, we need to move in that direction, but we need to move in it in an incremental way that we as Americans do with every piece of legislation.” [Hey Kentucky, 9/20/17]
• A few months later in December 2017, McGrath explained her preference for America’s health care system, “If we were to design a health care system from scratch and zap ourselves back 40 years, single-payer would be the way to go. It’s a very efficient way of doing business.” [Lexington Community Radio, 12/2/17]

After this latest flip-flop, Kentuckians are left wondering what McGrath will change her mind about next.
