LOUISVILLE – Team Mitch today released the following background document highlighting the multiple different explanations the Grimes campaign has given in regards to potentially receiving illegal gifts and services from her family’s corporate interests.

Now, The Grimes Campaign Says Their Campaign Bus Costs $180 A Day, With Fuel Not Included. “Later Thursday, Norton told the Herald-Leader that the campaign's contract with Signature Special Event Services calls for paying the company a daily rate of $180 for the bus and $200 for a driver, with fuel costs paid separately. When asked to provide a copy of the contract, Norton said she couldn't without approval from the campaign's legal staff.” (Sam Youngman, “Questions linger about Grimes campaign's payments for bus owned by father's company,” Herald-Leader, 8/21/14)

BACKGROUND:

First, The Grimes Campaign Told Politico Their Bus Cost $456 A Day. “A review of Federal Election Commission records shows Grimes paid less than $11,000 through June to rent the bus for at least 24 days, amounting to about $456 per day.” (Manu Raju, “The Grimes family discount,” Politico, 8/19/14)

The Courier-Journal Reported That The Grimes Campaign Payments For The Bus Were For “Bus Rental And Gasoline Fees”. “Politico reviewed Grimes' campaign finance reports and found that the campaign paid Signature Special Event Services, which is owned by Lundergan, less than $11,000 for bus rental and gasoline fees to use the bus on at least 24 days from when she entered the race last year though June.” (Joe Gerth, “Grimes campaign denies bus rental wrongdoing,” Courier-Journal, 8/20/14)

The Grimes Campaign Has Told Kentucky Media Outlets That Its $456 Daily Cost Does Not Include Fuel. “To buttress their argument, campaign officials have told several Kentucky media outlets that its daily rental costs of $456 do not include the price of fuel. Yet, According To Grimes’ FEC Filings, Fuel Was Included With The Cost Of The Bus Rental. “In that email, the Grimes campaign broke down all of its expenditures for the bus, saying its payments were for "bus rental + fuel costs." And that included two payments made on June 30 to Signature Special Event Services (Lundergan's company) for $5,334 and $1,145, which were listed in the FEC filings for "transportation, fuel." (Take a look for yourself on p. 3,450 of its July 15 quarterly report.) Those costs were included in the $10,939 total. (Elizabeth Titus, “DSCC targets Louisiana — Alaska air wars rage on — Immigration cools as CO-06 issue,” Politico Morning Score, 8/21/14)
