Final Bluegrass Poll Shows Clear, Growing McConnell Lead

LOUISVILLE – Team Mitch released the following background information on what the media are saying about Sen. McConnell’s steady lead heading into the election next week.

BACKGROUND

Nate Silver: Bluegrass Poll Shows Sen. McConnell With An Overwhelming Chance Of Victory. “With SurveyUSA (a highly rated pollster) now more in line with other polls of the state, we have a clearer story in Kentucky. It’s one that probably ends in a victory for McConnell, whose chances of winning are up to 87 percent.” (Nate Silver, “Senate Update: With 4 Days Left, Here’s The State Of The Races,” FiveThirtyEight, 10/30/14)

Bluegrass Poll Shows Sen. McConnell “Solidifying His Base”. “After four Bluegrass Polls showed McConnell falling below 80 percent among likely Republican voters, the senator appears to be solidifying his base. Eighty-six percent now say they will vote for McConnell.” (Sam Youngman, “Mitch McConnell widens lead over Alison Lundergan Grimes in final Bluegrass Poll,” Herald-Leader, 10/30/14)

Alison Grimes “Continues To Face Problems” Within The Democratic Party. “Grimes, on the other hand, continues to face problems within her own party. Only 71 percent of Democrats say they will support her and 23 percent say they will back McConnell.” (Sam Youngman, “Mitch McConnell widens lead over Alison Lundergan Grimes in final Bluegrass Poll,”Herald-Leader, 10/30/14)

Jennifer Duffy: Bluegrass Poll Shows The “Difficult Climb” For Alison Grimes. “Jennifer Duffy, senior editor at the Cook Political Report, said the Bluegrass Poll results are in line with other polling she's seen in recent days. She said that if the polling is accurate, Grimes has a difficult climb. "I think its hard to come back from 5 points," she said. "When you're talking about a race like this, 5 points is a big number." She said it's doubtful that a strong get-out-the-vote effort by Democrats could help Grimes. "A ground game is only good for 1 to 3 points." (Joe Gerth, “McConnell takes lead and momentum,” Courier-Journal, 10/31/14)

Dr. Stephen Voss: Bluegrass Poll Is “Devastating News” For Alison Grimes. “"The Bluegrass Poll has been the one independent source indicating that Grimes might be on target to win this Senate race, so having the numbers turn against her is devastating news," said Stephen Voss, a political science professor at the University of Kentucky.” (Sam Youngman, “Mitch McConnell widens lead over Alison Lundergan Grimes in final Bluegrass Poll,” Herald-Leader, 10/30/14)

Bluegrass Poll Shows Grimes With Her Highest Negative Ratings. “…with 37 percent holding a favorable view and 43 percent holding an unfavorable view, her highest negative rating of the year.” (Sam Youngman, “Mitch McConnell widens lead over Alison Lundergan Grimes in final Bluegrass Poll,” Herald-Leader, 10/30/14)
