LOUISVILLE – Team Mitch today released the following statement and background information on Alison Lundergan Grimes’ evolving stance on immigration and the current border crisis.

“It is unbelievable that one year into her campaign to represent Kentuckians at the federal level, Barack Obama’s Kentucky candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes still lacks a clear grasp on policy and the current state of affairs in America,” said Team Mitch spokeswoman Allison Moore.

First, Grimes Refused To Answer Questions Related To The Border Crisis

When Asked Four Times About The President’s Supplemental Budget Request For The Border Crisis, Grimes Refused To Answer And Would Only Reiterate Her Support For A “Pathway To Citizenship. “When asked four times if she would vote for the supplemental funding that Obama requested Tuesday from Congress, Grimes focused her answers on criticizing her opponent, U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. Grimes, who is Kentucky's secretary of state, said she was for securing the border and an "earned pathway to citizenship." But in her answers to questions about Obama's supplemental request, she repeatedly referenced McConnell's opposition to an immigration reform bill the Senate approved last year.” (Sam Youngman, “Grimes declines to take a stance on Obama's request for emergency immigration funds,” Herald-Leader, 7/10/14)

Then, Her Campaign Stated That The Children Should Be Protected

Grimes Campaign Manager Jonathan Hurst Says That Congress Should Take Steps To “Protect The Innocent Children”. ““In the short term, we should take steps to protect the innocent children and crack down on the illegal criminal organizations that profit off the trafficking of these children,” Hurst added. "Alison believes that no money should be authorized by Congress until there is a clear plan that outlines how these funds will be used to fully protect the children and secure the border." (Alexandra Jaffe, “Border crisis stirs up Senate races,” The Hill, 7/12/14)

Now, Her Campaign Believes The Children Should Go Home

Now Grimes Campaign Spokeswoman Says Grimes Believes The “Children Should Go Home”. “Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes believes the children should go home when it’s safe to do so, said Charly Norton, a spokeswoman.” (Theo Keith, “Paul sparks political firestorm with immigration comments,”WAVE3, 7/21/14)
